Water Practice

EBMUD, who owns Lake Camanche, has developed a protocol that will allow us to put our boats back in the lake while still protecting the environment from the possibility of Golden Mussel contamination. Club boats and equipment will be available at each practice.

For those wondering why we use Lake Camanche, there is a special filtering system in place that provides protection against the possibility of blue-green algae.There are very few bodies of water in Northern California that don’t have at least a caution about blue-green algae which is highly toxic for dogs. At Lake Camanche we can put our dogs in the water with no worry about that hazard.

Practice will be every Wednesday, starting May 20 through the end of September. Morning practice is from 9 am to noon, afternoon from noon to 3 pm. Sign-ups will be on the SuperSaas system at Supersaas PWDCNC Water Practice. If you have not practiced before or it’s been a while you will need to create a log-in.

Please remember, it is NOT NECESSARY TO PRACTICE AT THE LAKE EVERY WEEK! Practicing at home and local areas will give you a great foundation which you can then bring to the lake to introduce the water element. If you have a significant drive, or aren’t sure you can commit to multiple practices, signup for one practice and come see what it’s all about. There will be well experienced member handlers both in the morning and afternoon groups who will be willing to assist with training questions and suggestions for improvements.

Please do not sign up for repeated weekly slots if you cannot commit to being at each of those practices.

Morning group attendees are committing to be at the lake, ready to work, from 9 to noon. The afternoon group commits to the noon to 3 pm time frame. You will have 30 minutes per slot, you can break it into shorter segments but it’s a total of 30 minutes. You are expected to assist with other teams needing stewards, rowing, holding a dog, etc. You must also be aware of when your practice is coming up and have your dog and equipment ready to enter the training area as soon as the previous team clears the area.

Water trials will be September 26-27 with practice/setup Friday September 25 at Lake Camanche. We’re fortunate to have Karen Pratt back to California to judge for us this year.
